“I believe it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of the continent to the other.”
The Rome Braves and the city of Cave Spring will kick off the local celebration with fireworks Tuesday night, July 3.
The Braves’ fireworks will follow their ball game at State Mutual Stadium, while the Cave Spring fireworks will blast off from the Cave Spring Fire Department downtown at dark. They will be visible anywhere in downtown Cave Spring.
The Cave Spring Downtown Development Authority will be selling tomato sandwiches from the porch of the Welcome Center, 4 Rome St.
Celebrations continue Wednesday in both Cave Spring and Rome.
The annual Independence Day Parade in Cave Spring will get under way at 9 a.m. Organizer Christa Jackson said she expects close to 250 participants to meander through Cave Spring, from the old train depot to the public square and back.
Before the party along the Oostanaula River in Rome Wednesday evening, the Model Ruritan Club will host its annual barbecue sale from the Shannon Scout Hut from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Barbecue and Brunswick stew will be available along with a variety of desserts and drinks.
In Rome, the celebration will take place at Ridge Ferry Park, where the gates will open at 6 p.m. Concerts start at 8 p.m. with the Eighth Regiment Band followed by the Rome Symphony Pops.
The “illuminations” are slated to begin around 9:30 p.m. Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority Director Richard Garland said the fireworks display should last about 20 minutes.
Harbin Clinic is sponsoring the event in Ridge Ferry Park this year. “We’ve had sponsors that have helped us in the past but not to the extent that Harbin is this year,” Garland said. “They’re paying for everything: the orchestra, the Eighth Regiment band, the fireworks. They’ve helped us with the promotion of the event.”
