A possible 1-cent special purpose, local option sales tax is expected to be discussed during the Rome City Commission’s two-day planning session this week.

Commissioners will again have their annual retreat at Berry College’s WinShape Center. The session, set for Wednesday and Thursday, is aimed primarily at setting

goals for the upcoming year.

Officials with both Rome and Floyd County are making the move to get a continuation of the SPLOST put on the November ballot.

City Manager John Bennett said talk about what projects the board would like to see as part of the SPLOST package is expected to take place.

Voters rejected a proposed $32.4 million SPLOST in March 2012 that would have started when the 2009 SPLOST ends on June 30.

It included a variety of road projects and capital purchases for Rome, Cave Spring and Floyd County.

The County Commission is expected to appoint its members to the 2013 Citizen SPLOST Committee at its regular meeting Tuesday night.

The city has not yet decided how or when they will appoint their members, according to Bennett.

An appointment was not listed on the City Commission’s agenda for its regular meeting tonight, which is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. with caucus beginning at 5 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public and will beat City Hall, 601 Broad St.

The citizen committee will help draft a list of possible projects before it is presented to the city and county governments for approval prior to going before local voters.

Bennett said other topics on the tentative agenda for the retreat are the possibility of expanding the city’s redevelopment program into other parts of town and organizational matters.

The first day of the retreat is scheduled to begin at noon and last until 7:30 p.m. while Thursday will see things start at noon again and last until 5 p.m.

Bennett said the Floyd County Commission has been invited to eat dinner with the City Commission at the end of the day Wednesday.
