The only bad part about summer camps is having to deal with the hot summer weather. But the best way to beat the heat is to have a camp in the evening when the sun is on its way down.

For this reason, the Pepperell High Youth Baseball Camp has been going on in the late evening. And as far as Pepperell baseball coach Wright Edge is concerned, moving the camp to the evening was the perfect call.

“The camp has been going really good, and the evening time was definitely the better thing to do because it progressively gets cooler,” said Edge. “This is the most we’ve had in our camp so far and we’ve done it for four years now.”

The camp, which started Tuesday, has had 30 campers ranging from 6-year-olds all the way up to eighth graders. Helping lead the camp with coach Edge and his staff are some of the Dragons high school players.

Coach Edge is hoping that his players will learn a little bit themselves by taking part and helping instruct at the camp.

“I think it’s really good for them, and maybe they’ll learn a little bit of patience,” said Edge. “They hear me talking too, so they get to hear those fundamental type things that they should have learned along time ago. And they did learn those things, but it’s just brought it back to their attention.

“I think they really enjoy it, and I hope they get a lot out of this.”

Today is the final day of the camp, and the campers are sure to have a blast on the last day.

“Tomorrow’s the big day and they all look forward to it,” said Edge. “We’re going to talk about sliding and base running, and we bring out the big slip-in-slide and they have a big, wet day.”
