ATLANTA (AP) — The parents of a teenager who was fatally shot by a MARTA police officer last year has sued the transit agency.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the parents of 19-year-old Joetavious Stafford filed the lawsuit Tuesday in the Fulton County Superior Court.

The lawsuit claims that officer Robert Waldo was negligent when he responded to a fight at the Vine City MARTA Station in Atlanta.

Stafford was involved in a brawl outside the station located near the Georgia Dome after some high school football games took place on the night of Oct. 15, 2011.

MARTA officials say a shot was fired and Waldo ran toward the melee then subsequently fired several shots. But MARTA officials also say that Waldo believed Stafford was armed.
