Rome-Floyd Fire Department officials responded to a small fire in the garage of 119 Nelson Blvd. in Armuchee Thursday just before 4 p.m.

According to Division Chief Curt Pierson:

The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, which started in a plastic garbage can in the corner of the garage.

Lawn care workers spotted the smoke and flames and were able to extinguish the fire with a garden hose before fire department officials arrived.

There was some minor damage to the garage, but the fire did not spread to other parts of the home.

Pierson said the cause of the fire was undetermined and U.S. Fire Marshall officials had been summoned to the scene to investigate.
