After several days that featured on-and-off showers, the course at Coosa Country Club was a little soft and soggy on Tuesday.

But several of the players who are competing in the Burgett H. Mooney Jr. Rome Classic found the conditions to be just perfect.

Competing in the opening round of the 54-hole tournament, Jared Bettcher (of Auburn, Ala.) certainly wasn’t hampered by the wetness.

He carded his career-low round of 7-under-par 64 to build a four-shot lead in the boys division in the opening round.

Madison Lellyo of Windermere, Fla., leads the girls division after carding an even-par 71.

The tournament, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, continues today and runs through Thursday. The event features 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 12 states, Mexico and Argentina.

Numerous players in the girls field found the course to be favorable for scoring in the first round, resulting in nine players being within three shots of the lead.

Kayla Jones, of Milton, who is just two shots off the lead, said she was able to make the necessary adjustments amid the dampness.

“My drives weren’t going as far (as normal), but it was all right. I made it work,” said Jones, who is playing in the tournament for the second time.

“I love this course. It’s actually one of my favorites. … (And) I love this tournament. It’s so well run and great competition. It’s fantastic.”

David Mackey, of Bogart, said he altered his gameplan a little bit to compensate for the lingering effects of the rain.

“(There were) a lot of mud balls,” he said. “You just have to try to play through it; try to hit low drives, get the mud off of it (the ball).”

Mackey, like Jones, said he likes playing at Coosa Country Club: “It’s nice; I like it, my kind of course.”

The tournament, which runs through Thursday, continues today with second-round tee times from 7:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m. All players will tee off on the front side.

“I’m just hoping (today) I play more consistently and hit the greens so I can make a few more birdies,” said Jones.

Bettcher, the boys’ first-round leader, said he felt relaxed on Wednesday.

“I was having a great time out there today,” Bettcher said. “I really liked how these greens are playing, it really helped me putt well.”

Emmanuel Kountakis of Augusta, Ga. sits in second at 3-under-par 68. Prem Samritpricha of Bradenton, Fla. and Harrison Winger of Orlando, Fla. carded 2-under-par 69 for third place.

Tied for fifth at 1-under-par 70 are Justin Connelly of McDonough, Ga., Ben Schlottman of Advance, N.C., Blake Messer of Hampton Cove, Ala., Clay Brown of Davidson, N.C., and Alex Green of Fairhope, Ala.

In the girls division, Lellyo used her accuracy on the greens to build her lead.

“I putted well today which helped save me because I wasn’t hitting my irons well,” said Lellyo. “Hopefully tomorrow I’ll hit more greens.”

Sophia Schubert of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Sabrina Long of Alpharetta are tied for second at 1-over-par 72.

NOTE: The boys division played the course at 6,815 yards while the girls division played the course at 6,025 yards.
