Larry, a native of Lyons, met Robbie Maxwell in 1961 at the University of Georgia where they were in graduate school. Larry taught geography at the University of Georgia, the University of Kansas, and West Georgia College. Robbie taught economics and business law at Briarcliff High School in Atlanta and Athens High School.
They moved from Athens to Rome in 1972 when Larry accepted a position with Coosa Valley Planning Commission. He also worked for the Rome-Floyd County Planning Commission, retiring in 2001. Robbie accepted a position with
Floyd Medical Center and worked in various areas in health care quality, medical records, and personnel until her retirement in 2006.
The Lanes have three children: David Lane of Rome, Larilee Dare of St. Louis, and Ginny Carson of Dalton. They have eight grandchildren.
Larry and Robbie are members of Pleasant Valley South Baptist Church where they have taught discipleship classes.
The most memorable times in their lives are the births of their children and grandchildren and involvement in church and community work.
The couple says their successful marriage is due to the love, mercy, and grace of the Lord; the example set by both sets of their parents; their children who have brought them nothing but happiness; and the affirmation of many good friends, relatives, neighbors, ministers, and co-workers.
