TRION (AP) — Authorities are investigating the deaths of two inmates who were killed in separate incidents this week at the Hays State Prison in Chattooga County.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Thursday that Damien McClain was killed in a fight in a prison cell Wednesday morning. The newspaper reports the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged Daniel Ferguson with murder, and agents were inside the facility Thursday conducting interviews.

Authorities are also probing the death of 25-year-old Derrick Stubbs, who was found dead while housed in protective custody Saturday.

Calls to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Georgia Department of Corrections were not immediately returned Thursday.

GapitalC, when the majority of news outlets' primary mission is to demonize anyone on the right, it's easy to experiment with their Kool-Aid. The difference between you and I is that I'm smart enough to see through the toxic haze of its yummy grape flavor. You can't seem to put the cup down before getting another refill. People on both sides of the isle say dumb things that they wish they could take back. Maybe we should reflect on some of the famous quotes from the left.

Nancy Pelosi - "every month that we do not have an economic recovery package 500 million Americans lose their jobs."

Nancy Pelosi - "But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it."

"They're going to put y'all back in chains," Joe Biden.

“The word's out that he [Romney] hasn't paid any taxes for 10 years.” — Harry Reid

"Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go." - Barack Obama

“If I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.” - Barack Obama

“It’s here that companies like Solyndra are leading the way toward a brighter and more prosperous future.” - Barack Obama

I'm sure that none of these things were ever said and that they were simply made up by people like me, Rush, George, or some other right-wing nut job. I'm also sure that quotes like these are never discussed in your close circle of purple-tongued friends. Turning the blinders on and focusing on what is most important to actors, musicians, college professors, and the like is far cooler than facing reality. While you live for today, I will continue to prepare for a dark future brought on by your blissful ignorance. When the economy fails, and it will, you will have no one to blame but yourself. Oh, and just in case you happen to forget, I’ll always be around to remind you.

Just because some rich guys voted for Obama doesn't change a thing. There are generally three classes of people who voted for Obama. There are those who want something out of him, and there are those who won't be affected much by his liberal policies. Your rich boss would be the latter.

The third class, which I refer to as useful idiots, have been tricked by organized liberal outlets. These people are our greatest threat. They allow their emotions to overpower logic and sacrifice their own freedoms. They are tools of the government who are easily manipulated, and are too weak minded to recognize it. When they wake up, it will be too late.

Applauding the truth, but shaking my head at the same time. It's so obvious what the country is becoming and yet the momentum is unstoppable. Punishing the successful while rewarding the lazy. That can be applied to numerous changing beliefs of America. Wealth redistribution, immigration, criminal justice, civil litigation, education, just to name a few.

I feel sorry for our children who will grow up believing that success is had through luck, greed and government support/intervention, and that charity is when you rob from one who produces and give to one who holds his hand out.

Decades, even a century ago, there were people who predicted this was the route America would eventually take, and they were all written off as nuts. I bet they all wish they never would have had to say "I told you so"

You left out a very large class of Obama voters. They're former Republicans, now Independents, who would rather not be associated in any way with (in completely random order): Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Karl Rove, Wayne Lapierre, Dick Morris, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, trans-vaginal ultrasounds, everyone who said "I Built That!" because they can't comprehend compound sentences, exclusively male committees on contraception, rape as a Gift from God, magical intent-sensing ovums, those who believe that allowing gays to marry violates the sanctity of marriage (unlike say, divorce), Pat Robertson, Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich, those who can't grasp that Ronald Reagan made up the Welfare Queen or that we spend two-tenths of 1% of our budget on welfare. I could easily go on, but there's no need. Made simple, the GOP will never hold the presidency again in your lifetime.

In place (dysfunctional) government is a reflection of voters who elected them.

Outside of family not one whit of compassion for two deaths.

The prison system has become a desensitized, privatized, lucrative way to make money from misery.

BBchord, please explain to me where you get your information? It is quite obvious from your comments that you have no clue about Hayes State Prison.

When you have to watch killers, rapists, gang members and your own administration to see who will stab you in the back first.......yes, you become desensitized.

The prison is not privately run.....your tax dollars pay for these inmates. I'm not really sure how they are making money......the DOC has had so many budget cuts that it has become extremely dangerous for the officers. Cell Doors that don't lock, staff shortage and inexperience of what staff they have.

You really should check your facts before showing ignorance.

Tre,

I get it. You are angry. But I hope that though you may be speaking from the heart from personal experience, that you realize that not everyone who needs assistance wears a mask, smokes cigarettes, robs, steals, is an alcoholic, and has made bad decisions in life. I fear, however, that you don't. I fear that you put the dregs of society in one basket, label them dems, and the rest of us either ARE Republicans, or should be.

I work for a multi-millionaire who proudly voted for Obama in both elections. While most political opinions are formed based on your current situation, MANY base them on society as a whole...not just what interests them most.

I'd love to have a factual, logical discussion about today's political state, but first you have to get your comparison correct.

It's not that YOU are choosing who to buy a gift for, your rich aunt, disabled uncle or poor cousin. The real story is that you have decided that YOU will spend NONE of your money on gifts. Instead, you will steal from all of your neighbors, one of whom happens to be your rich aunt. Then you will buy your disabled uncle and poor cousin a gift using the stolen wealth, and then pretend that your a good guy because you "bought" them something. Then, the next Christmas, you'll promise them a more expensive gift, but only if they do what you want them to do. You'll vilify your rich aunt, ignore the fact that it was her money that allowed you to be a charitable philanthropist to your uncle who it turns out has a disability called alcoholism, and your poor cousin who works at a fast food joint because of bad decisions he made numerous times throughout his life. The uncle and cousin will complain about the sad state of their lives and how rich Aunt Edna should be forced to give them more money because they need a new Otterbox for their IPhones, and how shameful it is that they are forced to smoke generic cigarettes.

I regret that you can barely afford to feed your family of four. There are indeed people who cheat the system. But you are talking about the MINORITY (and I don't mean race.)

So the.jury...it's Christmas. You need to buy a gift for your rich aunt, your disabled uncle, and your poor cousin who works as an assistant manager at a fast food joint. You can only afford to buy for 2. Who gets left out? Democrats say the rich aunt. Republicans say the disabled uncle. How can you, who admittedly struggles to pay your bills, choose that way? Right now. Today. The REPUBLICAN argument is to NOT charge a higher rate of taxes to those who can afford it. Instead cut entitlement programs for those on Social Security (your disabled uncle, possibly a vet), Medicaid (provided to the working cousin's child because cousin's company doesn't offer insurance or he/she can't afford it.) Understand that entitlement programs are not just food stamps, friend. They are lifelines to people just like you who are one sick day away from losing your job and not being able to feed your family. How are your children insured currently?

HOW CAN YOU - IN YOUR SITUATION - AGREE WITH THAT ELITIST MENTALITY? FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, PLEASE ANSWER ME.

Trelicious, ask me a question, and I'll be glad to answer. Don't be afraid, I won't bite. To you, I represent the rest of the world - the ones who voted for the winner. You don't understand me. I'd be glad to help you understand. Ask a question and I'll be glad to answer it. Or better yet, make me understand you by saying something that matters.

Obvious that he is one of those that cheers the fact that Obama gives away free stuff to those unwilling to take care of themselves. It's the new America, you should just get used to it and not let it bother you. The good news is it's not sustainable, just look at Europe. It's great short-term politics however. Buying votes with welfare promises is about as short-term genius as you'll ever see.

wheninrome.....I didn't implicate anything, but since you brought it up... I DO believe I have an "understanding to the nation as a whole". I believe I live among a nation of absolute morons, who want to rely on the government to take care of them!! I believe that a white dumb@sscrat would've never won! I hate the fact that it's "cool" to live on wellfare and collect food stamps. I've witnessed a man buying T-bone steaks for his pitbull because food stamps don't cover dog food!! I work very hard to barely feed my family of 4 (with no government assistance), so forgive me if I seem a bit agitated!!

December 29, 2012
News flash, genius. Convicted felons can't vote. Your implication that black, incarcerated people are those who vote for Obama speaks to your blind understanding of the nation as a whole. Just because ALL the people in your trailer park, and most of the people in the great state of Georgia either didn't vote, or voted for Romney doesn't mean that the nation as a whole isn't smarter than that. You'll be glad to know that Obama can't run again, but the oppressive, racist, sexist ways of Romney's party will ensure another democratic victory in 2016. So, educate yourself and pick a side, but realize that the nation has grown up. You should follow suit.

1girlsopinion is probably someone who has a relative housed at Hayes and feels the need to defend inmates as a whole. I guess if I were in their shoes, I may do so myself. I am, however, on the other side. I have a relative who has been employed there many years and watched many things change at Hayes.

The situation at Hayes is extremely dangerous for officers and is like a boiling pot waiting to explode. Most officers know it won't be long and the current administration there isn't helping the matter AT ALL. Hayes was named Prison of the year and if you know anything about Hayes, you know it was either rigged or the other prisons in Georgia must be REALLY bad. 20 year employees are leaving in droves, this includes high ranking officers. 2 officers have been stabbed by inmates. Inmates are stabbing each other every other day and there have been murders.

I could go on an on about all the problems at Hayes but it won't do any good. The DOC has decided to cover up all the problems at Hayes for whatever reason. Could it be someone in administration they are covering for, probably. The warden with his head in the sand or the deputy warden and unit manager who have run the place in the ground?

Whatever the problem, the place used to be run like a well oiled machine. Now people have to die to get the public's attention. How sad.........

If you've never worked in a prison like Hays SP then really you can't make an informed opinion. Hays houses the worst of the worst in this state. Most have nothing to lose and they simply brought their violent tendencies to the "chain gang". They murder each other over cell phones, commissary items, gang rivalry, drugs, sex, snitching and simply for kicks every year. And the officers at Hays routinely put themselves in harms way responding to fights involving homemade weapons in an effort to protect inmates. 1girlsopinion some of the very ones that "brag" about the abuse are exaggerating or are just trying to act tough. The CERT teams at Hays can't use the physical measures needed anymore to control inmates as violent as the ones Hays houses. Has there been abuse in the past? Sure there has and probably will be some in the future. That's going to happen anywhere. But take it from someone who "really" knows, the problem at Hays is the violent inmates, violent gangs, and illegal operations they are involved in on a daily basis. I urge anyone who thinks they "know" what's going on inside of prisons to walk the floors as an officer.

1girlsopinion, your comment is exactly what your name says- an Uneducated Opinion... Having 3 years' experience as an officer in that very prison, I can HONESTLY tell you how stupid the thought of that comment is... You probably believe that the officers at Hays perform their rounds at the prison, armed with a gun, pepper spray, billy clubs, and protective armor, and that they can walk into a dorm, with 100 officers, and just beat the spit out of any inmate they want to, any time, and the inmates just cower at the site of the officers... wake up, girl; You couldn't be more misinformed.

For your information, these officers work in a dorm, where they are out-numbered 124 inmates-to-one officer, armed only with a set of keys, an ink pen, a radio, and a pair of handcuffs. That is it; The poor officers don't even have a handcuff key- let alone the gun, pepper spray, billy clubs and armor. The state of Georgia doesn't care enough about its officers to equip them with that kind of stuff (You must remember, this is the same employer that has only given ONE pay raise to its officers in the last 8 years).

Another thing, if that officer went in a dorm, and performed a "gang-style" beat-down on ANY inmate, the other inmates would kill every officer that came in the dorm trying to claim the stupid officer that tried. There are around 1680 inmates to - At The Most - around 50 officers in general population (On the night shifts, there are only around 25 officers there), and they simply would not allow an officer to beat up an inmate. That is absurd.

Also, the "gang-style" beat-downs you hear about are just that; They are, literally, GANG beatings... From what I have hear is going on, one particular gang in the prison is cleaning its house of its undesirables...

Oldnewswoman, you are most likely correct; We probably will never hear about what happened there, and, to be honest, it makes even the officers sick, that this crap gets covered up. The state wants everyone to think that life is peaceful and happy inside the walls, when, in reality, there is more gang warfare, and senseless violence than the public will ever know. The only news you ever hear is when an officer does something wrong, or an inmate escapes (which makes the officers look incompetent), or an inmate sues the state, because one rogue officer thinks his badge makes him superman. This news makes the public think that all officers are corrupt or not qualified to do the job, and makes everyone think of the officers as "baby-sitters", instead of actual Law Enforcement Officers. If the public really knew what happens daily, how many officers have to fight for their lives, just to try to keep a bunch of murderers, rapists, and thugs from killing each other (Or the officers), and how under-staffed and under-paid they are, MAYBE the officers would get treated with the respect they deserve, instead of having everyone think as OneGirlsOpinion does... If you don't believe me, ask any other law enforcement officer if they would go work at Hays... They think we are nuts to take on an un-winnable task...

I am no longer an officer (I got tired of fighting a battle that i couldn't win, un-armed, and for an employer that doesn't care for our safety or our sanity- as long as we don't let an inmate escape or die, and as long as we don't speak negatively about the GDC), so I can tell the truth, without fear of losing my job. I would tell you if the officers really did those things, but it just isn't true. Theses officers work alot of overtime, without receiving overtime pay, they work in horribly unsafe conditions daily, and are way under-staffed, but only ask that their company have their backs as much as they have each other's.

It's sad enough that my brother was falsely connvicted for the crime that the Ga courts charged him for. It hurts so bad that morning when me and my mom got the call from the Hays state prison warden. That call made time stop. The reports are not true my brother Damien McClain was murder in his sleep at 12:15 A.m. when all inmates are suppose to be in their cells. The Invitation states that my brother was not in a fight that he was murder in his jail cell. Someone let the murder out and into my brother cell and suffocated him in his sleep. My brother was 5'3 and 150 pounds he was being pick on all the time. Me and my mom are going to get this soveld and push this world wide to many of our young black men are lock up for being falsely accused and they get killed in prison. To all the mothers that have lost a son are lost a love one in prison it is time we put a stop to this. Put a stop to all the killing of incense people. Me and my mom is going to expose this story cause there is know reason that that man was suppose to be out of his cell. That man confess that he killed my brother. He is doing life in prison so it was nothing for him to take my brother life. And he is a cowered cause he killes my brother in his sleep. We are pushing for him to get the death bed for his actions.

Well said, CreamyWheat. I, too, know how the DOC operates. It seems that "sweep it under the rug" and minimization are common occurances. Bishop is a case in point.

Sadly, it is not just inside the prison walls where this kind of garbage happens. LEOs every where are outnumbered and not allowed to take the necessary actions when dealing with violent criminals. Brass is too concerned with liability versus officer and public safety.

I mean, everyone at Hays is "innocent", right? No one did the crimes that put them there.

A large number of the officers at this prison openly brag about inmate abuse. While the inmates obviously have broken laws to find themselves in custody, this does not mean they should be subject to "gang-style" beatings from the officers. Violence only breeds more violence.

As for what they will find? Well that depends on if they actually look... because if they do, I would bet corruption is what they would find.
