Crews have begun tearing up the sidewalk in the 200 block of Broad Street this week - a prelude to replacing areas that have deteriorated over time.

The bulk of the project will center on the 200, 300 and 400 blocks on the east side of the street, although a few other, smaller areas are included.

The Rome City Commission awarded the contract to Rome-based Spriggs Construction Co., the low-bidder at $325,758.60. Funding is through the federal Community Development Block Grant award for 2011.

The completion date is tentatively listed as Dec. 31.

Work is starting in the 200 block so the restoration there will be done in time for the planned Sept. 7 First Friday Concert street party.
