Floyd County commissioners say they support combining the Armuchee and Cave Spring ambulance coverage if the move maintains or improves emergency response times. Today, the County Commission will address the recommended zoning modification, proposed by the Region 1 Emergency Management Services Council. If accepted, the commission will forward the recommendation to the state Board of Human Resources, the final authority on the matter. The proposal could clear the way for Redmond Regional Medical Center to take over ambulance services in Armuchee and Cave Spring. Floyd Medical Center announced it would pull its ambulances out of Cave Spring and would consider service cutbacks in Armuchee. Cave Spring residents have openly opposed the decision, fearful it could lengthen the time that ambulances respond in emergencies. FMC objected to Redmond servicing Armuchee. Redmond has said it cannot afford to provide service in Cave Spring without also servicing Armuchee. FMC also cited financial considerations in its decision to pull out of Cave Spring. Kurt Stuenkel, FMC CEO, said Monday that the hospital was drafting a response for today's meeting, but declined to elaborate. County commissioners said their main concern is service. "I want to keep the best possible ambulance service that we can have in this county, and if this is a means of doing it then I can support it," Commissioner Chuck Hufstetler said of the EMS council's recommendation
