Looking out from under his straw hat, Rep. Austin Scott appeared cool and collected in spite of the heat.

"It's been great. It's a nice day, the wind is blowing," said Scott.

Scott, a Republican from Tifton, is currently walking through Georgia to spread the word about his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor. He was in Rome today, and walked down Martha Berry Highway to downtown.

Scott plans to travel about 1,000 miles in approximately 10 weeks.

"We walk a minimum of 10 miles a day and then we go into town to shake hands and talk with people," said Scott.

He said he relates to the everyday Georgians and wanted to walk around Georgia to meet with them.

"I ask, 'If you were governor for a day, what would you do?" he said. "The number one answer is the economy. A lot of people are worried about their jobs. Education and crime came after that."

Scott hopes his walk around Georgia will help raise awareness about his campaign.

"We were never under the impression that we could raise money like the other candidates," said Scott. "We'd like to raise $100 from 100 people in 159 counties."

Austin's walk, which started Saturday in Chickamauga, will end at the Capitol in Atlanta.

I'm a Cartersville native now living in the Albany area, and I've talked to Scott for the political blog I operate, SWGAPolitics.com.

Quite honestly, of the GOPers I've seen so far, Scott is the one I personally am most comfortable with voting for. We don't agree on everything, but he is an honest, sincere man who will discuss things openly and when he commits to a position, you can take it to the bank. Raised with the Northwest Georgia values that I was, that means a lot to me.

jawgadude: The polling right now is largely name recognition and not much more. On the issues, Scott is one of the better GOP candidates, and certainly FAR more sane about things than Ray McBerry. He is a realist dedicated to his State and his family, and it is because of his family that you will not see him challenging Marshall any time soon.

When you're in last place behind old flagger Ray McBerry, I guess you have to do something to get attention. Scott needs to drop out and instead challenge Jim Marshall for Congress down in his south Georgia district.
