The geometric mean on Aug. 9. of our three testing sites was 104.5 cfu/100ml, below the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency safe level of 126 cfu/100ml.

The readings for the three individual sites were as follows:

US 411 near Kingston: 107.1 cfu/100ml

Grizzard Park at the Rome Bypass near Rome 111.2 cfu/100ml

2nd Avenue in Rome: 95.9 cfu/100ml

Since May 3 when CRBI began the monitoring program, bacteria levels in the river have remained low with only one of 13 monitoring events exceeding the USEPA safe level of 126 cfu/100ml. Bacteria levels in the Etowah tend to increase after heavy rains when pollution washes off the surface of the land into the river and streams feeding the river.
