JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African gold mining company says a fire in a mine near Johannesburg has left five workers dead.

In a statement Sunday, Gold Fields added 14 miners were hospitalized for routine observation after the fire late Saturday.

Gold Fields did not give a cause of death. South Africa's state broadcaster quoted the national mining union as saying it was smoke inhalation.

The company says the mine was closed following the fire until further notice.
