A Catoosa County sheriff’s deputy has been placed on leave after wrecking a vehicle and being arrested on charges of driving drunk. He was off-duty at the time of the crash.

According to sheriff Phil Summers, in a prepared statement:

On Friday, Aug. 27, at about 8 p.m., off-duty employee Josh Herbert was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Chattanooga Valley Road in Walker County. The Georgia State Patrol conducted the accident investigation. Herbert was arrested for driving under the influence.

Herbert has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Catoosa County Sheriffs Office.

“I am disappointed in the employee’s actions,” Summers said. “However, it would be inappropriate to comment further for the internal investigation is not yet complete.”

Herbert is a deputy with the county’s court services.

According to Gordy Wright, Georgia State Patrol spokesman with the Atlanta office, Herbert was traveling north on Chattanooga Valley Road, north of Rock Creek Road, about 8:35 p.m. when he went off the road and crashed into a utility pole.

Herbert sustained minor injuries due to air bag burns. He smelled of alcohol and was given a field sobriety test, registering a blood-alcohol content of 0.09. The limit for driving legally on a Georgia state road is 0.05.
