The City Commission will announce during its meeting tonight that Lonzo Roberson has been named interim chief of the Rome Police Department.

Police Chief Hubert Smith is retiring July 2 after 43 years with the department. Roberson is currently deputy chief of the department.

Also in the meeting, City Attorney Bob Brinson is expected to administer the oath of office to David Smith, who has been named the new municipal court judge.

The former judge, Gene Richardson, accepted an appointment as Floyd County Chief Magistrate.

Smith, a local attorney, was the driving force behind construction of the handicapped-accessible treehouse that was built last year at Ridge Ferry Park.

I totally agree with the other posts. I am not even sure that Deputy Chief Roberson has the minimum Qualifications for the position, only that he has like Chief Smith has been there forever. The Rome Police Dept if Steeped in the "Good ole Boy system" and it looks like it is going to stay that way.

Hopefully it's not a permanent choice. I think there are more qualified officers in the department. One in particular who serves on many boards and does much for our community outside of the force.
