Less than one month after approving a resolution to implement furlough days for Floyd County Schools employees, the board of education will be approving a revised resolution tonight at its regular monthly meeting. The revision will allow the system to count Feb. 12, which was a snow day for county schools, as a furlough day.

“Since Gov. Perdue announced additional furloughs for school employees in January, our plan has been to use any day school is canceled due to inclement weather as a furlough day. Using inclement weather days as furlough days allows teachers to keep their planning days that were on the original calendar,” said Tim Hensley, assistant to the superintendent.

At last month’s meeting the board agreed Jan. 8, which was also a snow day, would be counted as one of the three furlough days mandated by the state. Teachers and principals will take their third day on either March 12 or June 1-3. Year-round employees will take March 12 as their third furlough day.

Hensley said school officials want the furlough days to have as little impact on students as possible, so using the days when classes were canceled for bad weather makes sense. The benefit for students, he said, is that teachers will be able to have their planning time to better prepare for instructional days with students.

In other business, the BOE will also:

  • Recognize Oglethorpe Power for establishing a $1,000 scholarship at each of the four county high schools. The academic scholarships will go to one graduating senior at each school with at least a 3.5 grade point average who is attending a Georgia college.

  • Recognize the Coosa Valley Fair Association, which will present a check to support the county system’s fine arts programs.

  • Recognize John Pillsbury, a volunteer community graduation coach at Pepperell High School. Pillsbury was recently given a 2010 Heart of the Community of Honor award for his work at the school.

  • Recognize Clair Hill, an Armuchee sixth-grader, for winning the Floyd County Schools spelling bee. The board will also recognized Alto Park Elementary and Armuchee Middle for winning their respective quiz bowl championships.

The Floyd County BOE will meet today at 7 p.m. at the central office on Riverside Parkway. The meeting caucus begins at 5:30 p.m.
