A Brewer Rome home in eastern Floyd County was destroyed by fire late Friday night after a witness said a fire on the stovetop got out of control.

The blaze at 350 Brewer Road started about 10:30 p.m. No one was hurt.

Misty Bentheimer said her boyfriend Tommy Black was hanging Christmas lights outside and came back in to cook something. He put a pan of cooking oil on the stove and went back to work, she said.

Bentheimer said she was in a back room when she realized there was a fire in the kitchen. She said she tried to put it out using a kitchen fire extinguisher but could not get it working. They have found temporary living arrangements but lost most of their possessions.
