Saturday night may have been cold at Barron Stadium, but the 36th annual Peach State Marching Festival went on as usual.

Eleven bands performed this year, including Armuchee and Coosa. Rome High School and Rome Middle School bands performed but did not compete since they were the host bands.

“It was excellent,” Sonja Stephen said. She and her family bundled up and came to support Chattanooga Central but fell in love with them all.

“It was great to see all the bands perform. They all did a very good job,” she said.

Romans Connie and Lee Stone were there for their son, Jacob, a part of Rome High band.

“It was really good. They practice so hard, you can tell,” Connie Stone said.

The winners of this year’s Peach State Marching Competition and Festival were broken into three major awards. The 2009 winner of the Don Everett Award for Musical Excellence was North Cobb High School. The winner of the Dr. David L.Walters Championship Trophy was Woodstock High School. The winner of the Thomas Eugene Inglis Grand Champion Award was North Cobb High School.

If you look at the actual performance schedule, it is more like 9 bands...Rome Middle and Rome High were the feature bands, and 2 bands marched twice - once in Festival and once in Competition. While I applaud the young musicians and all their hard work to get there and to perform - their performances were all of great calibre; it sure is sad to see where this once great event has come to due to lack of leadership...Sad, sad, sad.

13 bands is all Peach State could attract?? Why even hold the event if organizers can't do any better than that? Peach State at one time was a great event but it sure has fallen apart since the days of Gene Inglis when it was an all day event that bands moved mountains so they could attend.
