Often the precipitation that falls in January is white and frozen, but this week temperatures remained nearly 30 degrees above the freezing mark, and all that fell from the sky was rain.

The weather has been more spring-like during the past month, with a tornado touching down in Rome on Dec. 22.

Forecasters know why the winter has been so mild. “Warm air coming up from the Gulf,” said Mike Leary, a forecaster for the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

The heavy rains that fell off and on Thursday led the NWS to issue a flash flood watch for Rome and most of Northwest Georgia.

A total of 0.37 inches fell during the 24 hour period that began at 6:53 p.m. Wednesday and ended Thursday.

The river levels also decreased during that time frame. The Etowah decreased from 15.96 inches to 13.87 inches. The Oostanaula went down to 11.41 inches from 14.11 inches.

Today’s weather is expected to be much better with mostly sunny skies with highs still warm, near 57 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

But look for temperatures to feel more winter-like tonight as lows will be around 34 degrees.

Here’s a look at the forecast for the next few days:

Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Northwest wind about 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 57. Calm wind becoming north between 10 and 15 mph.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 59.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 59.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 66.
