The radar units inside Floyd County Police Department cruisers are once again legal to use, and officers are back to clocking drivers’ speed on roadways around the area.

Capt. John Blalock with the Floyd County Police said the go-ahead came from the state at about 9:40 a.m. Thursday to put the radar units in the cars back into action now that paperwork has gone through at the state level to allow their legal use.

“We were told it was placed in the mail this (Thursday) morning and that we’re now authorized to run radar,” he said.

Radar usage in Floyd County police cruisers was stopped last week after Floyd County police officials realized the paperwork they needed to legally enforce speed limits with their radars had expired.

Because of the error, county coffers lost an estimated $15,000 in fines from at least 200 tickets.

Blalock said no specialized enforcement of speeding laws would be taking place because of the error now that radar units are back in operation.

The radars were fine and calibrated properly, said Maj. Mark Wallace.

Radars are calibrated annually, said Sgt. Rock Pace of the Rome Police Department.

Trelicious, ok you got me. it was the wrong dept. The point of the whole thing is who cares that they lose out on 15k, is that news worthy?

yomama, it was the Floyd county police, not the Rome police. Strike 1.

yomama, can you find me one article where the cops mention revenue? The probate court is the only one who was quoted as saying anything about revenue. Strike 2.

You're on a roll. Want to try again? It's because of people like you that the police department ignores legitimate frustrations or complaints that people might have. Ignorant, uneducated people like yomama who just sit back in their recliner from the pay-by-the-week rental store, half read an article and say "yup, uh-huh, dem cops oughtta do it thissa way instead o datta way"

I have never received a ticket in Floyd county. PERIOD! My problem is there are so many terrible drivers in Floyd County that more roadblocks are needed for enforcement. Every cop in Rome should be required to write at least 200 tickets a month, 50 of which should be to big trucks. Every Friday night I would like to see checkpoints near every bar in this county, more speed enforcement on Hwy 411 and hwy 27 everyday. Inspections on vehicles should be brought back into play to rid the roads of so many junk vehicles.

Order of importance, revenue before safety and other crimes?

You know you have a dirt bag Police dept. when they start worrying about income from spending tickets. If the Rome police dept would focus on stolen cars, guns, ie anything that goes to auction or drug money maybe they wouldnt have to worry about 15k.

If they were really interested in upholding GA law, then they would also be enforcing Georgia Code - 40-6-184. (a)(1). You can look it up, but in sumary, IT IS ILLEGAL to drive below the speed limit when in the left lane, unless making a left turn. Of course in Rome, they would make a heck of a lot more money enforcing this than speeding. Funny though,I don't see ninja cycle cop jumping from the darkness to ticket all of you that want to block the flow of traffic going 20 mph all the way across Rome. He only goes after those that are trying to get to work (and if this isn't the truth, then where is ninja cop when its not between 6am and 8am, or 4:30pm and 6:30pm). Ohh yeah, that's right all those driving the big circle around Rome all day don't have jobs, so no money. Anyway, back to my point, if you're going to enforce speeding, then you MUST also enforce "slowness" in the left lane. And for the rest of you, stay out of the left lane if you can't keep up with traffic.

I AGREE!!!!!

Also what about all the commercial trucks riding or should I say drag racing stop light to stop light every morning. Clearly Ninja cop isn't up to date with the signs and laws concerning big trucks on Turner McCall/Shorter Ave. Signs clearly state all trucks(10,12 16 and 18wheelers) must use the right lane. every moring as I drive in to town there are the heavily loaded log trucks drag racing each other from one side of town to the other.

Ninja cop along with most of the other taffic cops have thier favorite hiding spots btween 9am and 4pm so as not to have to work. "writers cramp" you know.

Nope, notinrome, no tix for me. Too dangerous in Rome with all the people that run red lights and stop signs in this place. Not including the kamikaze's around town. You know the ones. You see them at the stop sign staring you down and then wait until you're 20 feet away to pull out in front of you.

The State of Georgia requires municipal and county police agencies to allow a speeder 10mph over the posted speed limit and 5mph over in a school zone, while using radar as a means to detect speed. Most cops allow 5mph over that requirement before writing a ticket. If someone drives that much over the speed limit and gets a ticket, they've broken a law that the Georgia Legislator enacted. So what difference does it make if its revenue or safety? The offender gets a ticket for breaking the law. Those darn legislators are always making laws that help save lives. I dare them!!!!

anotherpoint, I believe that if you check the law it says that you can be charged using radar if you are speeding in properly marked school zones one hour before, during, and one hour after the normal hours of school operation, in properly marked historic districts, and in properly marked residential zones. Thoroughfares with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or more shall not be considered residential districts. There is no "courtesy" variance in the law for these areas.

RNT needs to run another story next month comparing February revenue from tickets to previous months. Be interested to see if the county is actually using radar for safety or to generate revenue.

Watch out everybody if you will be out driving this weekend. It will be makeup days for the lost revenue. On the upside it may be one of the most safe weekends to drive around Rome for people who normally don't speed. We won't have to worry about so many speeders on the road when the word gets out about all the radar being run with all hands on deck and the blue lights flashing all day.
